The Science of Speed Gives a First-Hand Look at Racing

When the Carnegie Science Center announced it was rebranding to be the Kamin Science Center thanks to a generous donation from the Kamins, word trickled down that many exhibits at the facility would begin to get a refresh over time.

We were quite excited for this one as we always love new and updated exhibits in our local museums.

One of the major overhauls was the announcement of a new exhibit, Science of Speed, taking over the annex building that held SportsWorks. After a significant changeover, this one opened to the public in August 2026, and I got a chance to check it out ahead of opening for a media preview.

Let's take a look at all the new features in this one!

We love tiki drinks, and when we heard that Spork Island Trading Company was opening up as an immersive tiki bar in Pittsburgh's Cultural District, we had to go right away.

This one combines a beautiful ambiance with a robust tiki menu and is helping convert Penn Avenue downtown into quite the cocktail hub.

So, let's dive in and share a bit of our experience from opening night in this one!

Pinball Perfection is Taking a Trip Back in Pinball History

There is no shortage of great pinball arcades in Pittsburgh, and for those who like taking a trip through history, a visit to Pinball Perfection in West View is a must.

This attraction, like others in the area, offers a wealth of machines set to free play mode for an hourly entry fee. But what makes Pinball Perfection a bit different from the rest is that their collection is as much a museum experience as it is a place to play.

The vintage machine collection here is serious!

Schwirian Farm Sunflower Festival is a Must Visit

Our visit to Schwirian Farm for their annual sunflower festival at their farm just outside of Elizabeth, PA, was a few years in the making.

The reason for this is that prior to 2021, the annual festival was brief- just a day or so (the rest of the season the farm would be closed to the public). As such, it shouldn't be a surprise that we simply missed it by either being out of town or not being on top of tracking when that exact date would be.

But starting in 2021, the festival changed. Instead of being just a single day, it runs for a full week thanks to its incredible popularity (in 2026 the festival began on July 13th and runs until the 28th- however, check their social media for updates on the end date). Since I had this one on my calendar for a full year to ensure I didn't miss it when it came back, we made sure to go on the very first day and were very glad we did.

In this one, we wanted to share a bit more about what you can expect when visiting the Schwirian Farm Sunflower Festival!

Butcher and the Rye Review – Whiskey and Modern Cuisine

Butcher and the Rye is a whiskey bar and meat-forward restaurant located in downtown Pittsburgh in the heart of the cultural district. Shuttered during COVID, the restaurant recently reopened with a revamped menu. The massive wall of whiskey remains the focal point of the space, while the food is perfectly designed to pair with the spirit-forward drink list.

We made it in to Butcher and the Rye during their re-opening week and were happy to see that the space still has multiple dining nooks acoss each of its levels, creating a cozy and intimate feeling. We were seated on the second level in front of the den-like library complete with a giant stuffed black bear. The menu matches the vibe – think bourbon-focused cocktails, dry aged meats, lots of game dishes, and other hearty fare.

Baconburgh is Pittsburgh’s Bacon-Themed Food Truck Rally

We love a good food truck rally, and, to be honest, don't really need much of an excuse to go out to attend any when they pop up around the city.

Pittsburgh food trucks are, admittedly, pretty delicious, and we'll eat at many of our favorites every chance we can get.

But give those food trucks a theme, and we are all-in. So when the crew behind Beers of the Burgh teamed up with local influencer, Alex Eats Too Much (a great friend of ours), to bring a bacon-themed food truck rally to life, aptly named Baconburgh, you know we were there in its inaugural year.

Now that this one is returning as an annual event, we wanted to share a bit more about what you can expect when attending!

Vieux Carre Brings Prohibition Vibes to the Strip District

We always have to give a hand to the Richard DeShantz Restaurant Group, because when they go big for a project, they really lean into it.

After opening their club/lounge Strip District venue, Sea Monkey, we caught wind that they were also transforming a backroom space into a high-end speakeasy, aptly named Vieux Carre.

As we are always delighted to take a trip back in time to an appropriately themed speakeasy, we knew we had to get into this one right away and were not disappointed.

Vieux Carre is a darn fine cocktail bar in Pittsburgh, albeit at a price to match!

Winston’s Grilled Eats & Frozen Treats Review – Classic Fare

We've been fans of Pittsburgh Sandwich Society for many years, from their early food truck days to their permanent kitchen menu at Strange Roots in Millvale.

When we heard they were leaving the brewery in June 2026, we were at first quite sad about the news. But this one comes with a silver lining, as the crew behind the stellar food was not only bringing their mobile food truck back (hooray!) but also taking over the former Crazy Cones spot in Millvale for a new custard and grill concept- Winston's Good Eats and Frozen Treats!

Naturally, we had to go check this one out shortly after it opened, and it was everything we hoped it would be.
