Homewood Suites Pittsburgh Review – In the Heart of the Strip District

Homewood Suites Pittsburgh is one of the newest hotel properties in the city (constructed in 2016), and is located right in the heart of the iconic Strip District neighborhood.

During our stay we wanted to find out what made this new property worth visiting, and how it stacks up to the others nearby.

Primanti Brothers Review – A Pittsburgh Institution with Fries On Top

When it comes to local Pittsburgh institutions, none are more famous than Primanti Brothers. For both visitors and locals alike this sandwich shop is one of the icons of Pittsburgh (often being called the Pittsburgh sandwich).

But what makes this shop so special, and why are Pittsburghers so passionate about it (on both sides of the spectrum)? It doesn't take much to figure it out.

Eleven Pittsburgh Review – A Refined Menu in the Strip District

Eleven is the fanciest of all the Big Burrito restaurants in Pittsburgh, there is no doubt about it.

Situated on Smallman Street in between the Strip District and Downtown, Eleven is located in a renovated old warehouse with high ceilings and a grand-yet-sleek decor. The menu is equally refined, with a contemporary style reminiscent of sister restaurant Casbah in Shadyside.

Combine all of these features and you have the makings of a restaurant that is perfect for a celebration (which in our case was our birthdays)!

A Shopping and Eating Guide to Pittsburgh’s Strip District

The Strip District is one of our favorite neighborhoods in Pittsburgh for a number of reasons.  It is home to a large assortment of international grocery stores and retailers, boutique shops, independent merchants, and several of the best restaurants in Pittsburgh (many of which feature international cuisine as well).

Although we've been down to the Strip District hundreds of times over the years, it seems like every time we visit we discover a new business worth exploring and shopping at.

To share some of our own personal favorites, this guide to the Strip District was born!

It is worth noting that the following is not a collection of every business in the Strip District. This article only features businesses that we personally visit when we explore the neighborhood.  As such, it should only be taken as a starting point and is certainly not a list of every establishment.

If you see an interesting store while walking around the Strip District, do yourself a favor and go inside!

Smallman Galley Review – An Upscale Food Hall in the Strip District

What do you get when you combine the food hall concept found in East Asia with executive chefs and Pittsburgh's Strip District?

The answer is Smallman Galley, and this addition into Pittsburgh's food scene is going to change the way you look at new restaurants.

The reason? This one features not just one chef, but four.

Penn Avenue Fish Co. Review – Seafood Brunch in the Strip District

Penn Avenue Fish Company is my idea of a perfect brunch spot in the Strip District. We love to skip right past the mile-long lines outside of DeLuca's and Pamela's and head straight here for a relaxing weekend brunch. (Don't get us wrong, there is a time and a place for DeLuca's and Pamela's, but sometimes you're just too hungry to wait in line!)

Not only is Penn Ave Fish Co. a beautiful fish market with very trained and knowledgeable staff, it's got a surprisingly delicious casual seafood menu, too.

Bar Marco Review – An Amazing Dining Experience in the Strip District

Pork Lion at Bar Marco

There are some restaurants that you know the meal is going to be good from the very beginning, and within moments of entering Bar Marco in the Strip District I knew that this would be one of them.

While I was right on my hunch that the food and drinks would be fantastic, the portion sizes gave us reason to pause.

Pho Van Review – Underwhelming Vietnamese in the Strip District

Noodle Bowl at Pho Van in Pittsburgh

Vietnamese cuisine is a culinary style that hasn't taken off in popularity yet in Pittsburgh, but is one of the best national cuisines in the world.  During my travels in Vietnam I fell in love with the cuisine, but also came away with an understanding that it is also hard to do right as there is a fine line to make the sweet, spicy, and salty flavors work in many of the dishes.

There are several restaurants that do an incredible job at Vietnamese food in Pittsburgh, Tram's Kitchen and Lucy's Banh Mi cart being a few, and it was with great excitement that I visited Pho Van in the Strip District to try some more of one of my favorite cuisines.

Unfortunately, I left reminded why this cuisine is so hard to do right.  Pho Van was a major let down.

Heinz History Center – Learning the History of Pittsburgh

Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh, PA

Every city needs a great museum to let its history shine, and in Pittsburgh that museum is the Heinz History Center in the Strip District.

Our first observation after entering the Heinz History Center was that it was much like the popular Smithsonian Museums in Washington DC.  But instead of having separate buildings for each theme as in our nation's capital, the Heinz History Center has everything in one building.

Well, as it turns out the museum is in fact affiliated with the Smithsonian, and the legacy of the nation's most popular museum collection shines in every exhibit in this city gem.
