If you've spent some time working your way through our meal and restaurant reviews on this site, you'll know that my general pattern for ordering items is if it sounds weird or is a flagship/namesake menu item, I must try it. At Peppi's Old Tyme Sandwich Shop, this came in the form of The 7, also known as the Roethlisburger.

With a sandwich named after Big Ben himself, there is no other that I would rather try- and now I can't order anything else from their menu.

With an ingredient list that includes sausage, ground meat, a fried egg, American cheese, onion, lettuce, tomato, and mayo, The 7 actually sounds somewhat basic when you really think about it. In fact, the first time I ordered it I was completely prepared for it ending up a miss and end up needing copious amounts of french fries on top to save it- much like other sandwich shops in the city have to do.

Luckily, The 7 doesn't need the help.

While I would go on the record to say that the flavors are exactly what you'd expect from the ingredient list outlined above, and may not be for everyone, the sandwich works for us.  It may be the copious slathering of mayo, the seasonings in the meat, or perhaps it is the doughy bread that gives the sandwich an added kick that its competitors just don't have, but when I'm in the mood for a massive sub that will both be delicious and last for two meals- Peppi's is where I'll go.

Now if only I could pull myself away and try anything else past The 7.  I wouldn't count on it happening any time soon.

Peppi's has multiple locations throughout the city including Downtown, the Strip District, and the North Side.  Hours vary by location.  Peppi's North Side location was featured in this article, and is cash only.
