We are fortunate to have so many talented artists in the Pittsburgh area. With these artists come the art shows, and there are truly a number of excellent events to enjoy throughout the year.
One annual event that has become one of our favorites is A Fair in the Park by the Craftmen's Guild of Pittsburgh. This one showcases 80+ artists (many of whom are local members of the guild) with a variety of mediums, with the stunning Mellon Park as the backdrop for three days every September.
A stroll around the park while shopping for art on a nice late-summer's day? It really is hard to beat that one- if you can get parking at least.

A Fair in the Park is the Best of Both Worlds
No matter your interests, a Fair in the Park is one of those events that is just fun to walk through, even if you're not shopping- especially if the weather is nice. The beauty of Mellon Park is hard to beat, and when it is full of art and music, it is all the better. We simply enjoyed walking around and treated the experience like an art show as much as an art sale.
On the artist side of things, one of the reasons this is a favorite art festival of ours is that the Craftsmen's Guild of Pittsburgh goes to great lengths to curate a stellar selection of artists.
This includes ensuring that many styles of art are represented (their website mentions clay, fiber, wood, jewelry, glass, leather, metal, mixed media, and two-dimensional art as part of the medium list at the time of publishing), but also vetting the artists themselves. Upwards of 60% of the artists are members of the guild, and the remaining are selected by a jury from national and international applicants.
So when you're walking around, you'll get a perfect mix of everything- art styles, artist locations, and more. Throw on a couple of local food trucks and live music, and you really have a perfect day out at one of our favorite city parks.
Finally, given that Mellon Park doesn't have one large space for all of the artists, keep in mind that they may be spread out. So be sure to check out the map on the Craftmen's Guild website closer to the event to check out the locations of all of the vendors to ensure you don't miss anything.
Just Be Careful With Parking – This One is Popular
Truly, the only downside to A Fair in the Park is that Mellon Park has limited parking. During our visit, the parking lot near the fair area (near the Walled Garden at Fifth and Shady) was completely full with many cars circling to try and nab an opening spot. Likewise, the limited nearby street parking was, as you may guess, completely full due to the popularity of the event.
We were fortunate enough to score a spot at the parking area across Shady at the spray park and walked over, but do not be surprised if you may have to circle around a bit or park further away in the residential streets when attending the event. Do not worry, though, as the effort to get a spot is worth it for this fun event!
Ignoring the parking logistics, A Fair in the Park is a fun art show for those attending just to enjoy the art as much as it is a great place to shop. Don't miss it on a nice September day!
A Fair in the Park typically takes place over three days in early September next to the Walled Garden at Mellon Park at Fifth and Shady. More information can be found on the Craftmen's Guild of Pittsburgh website.
