Go for the Beer, Stay for Food at Beercode

We were fortunate enough to fly through PIT shortly after Beercode opened and made our way in for a quick round before our flight. At the time of our visit, local breweries such as Abjuration, Cinderlands, Dancing Gnome, Eleventh Hour, and Helicon could be found on the menu with numerous styles- including Eleventh Hour's New Cult IPA and a cheesecake sour from Abjuration which quickly made its way to our table.

Some of the best hazy IPAs and fruited sours available at Pittsburgh International Airport? Well, you don't have to tell us twice- this is what we've been wanting for years!

After the round, of course, came the bill and we were (unpleasantly) surprised to find that the brews clocked it north of $12 each. There is, of course, an argument to be made as to why airport concessions are more expensive than normal, and we get it within reason. But $12+ was a bit of a stretch for us, and we admittedly made our way to the Priority Pass lounge for beverage number two instead of paying for a second round.

On a second visit to Beercode, I was able to sample more brews as well as some of the gastropub-oriented food as part of the restaurant's grand opening festivities. Options like the house burger, a fried chicken sandwich, a pierogi tray, and chicken and waffles made their way to our group's table.

While I may have some strong opinions about the price of beer, the food, on the other hand, was pretty good, especially when remembering you're in the airport. The menu is a straight-up gastropub with an array of offerings that honestly put other restaurants in the airport to shame- particularly any dish with fried chicken.

The chicken and waffles were a standout winner for everyone, primarily because the soft and tender waffles had a nice counterpoint to the crispy and rich fried chicken- with a sweet syrup to bring it all together. Although I often only stick to this one during brunch, I have to admit that if it was on the menu at any time of day it would be a strong contender to wind up on our table- with a beer, of course (just one).

Ultimately, while on the more expensive side, we love seeing the airport get more bars and restaurants with local connections all the same. Whenever our travels have us visiting the airport, we certainly won't say no to one last stellar IPA from a local brewery to send us off to our next destination.

The bill, on the other hand, well, we just won't pay attention to that for a single round. Vacation rules now apply.
