A Quiet Stay in Oakland

When we first arrived to the Courtyard by Marriott Pittsburgh University Center, the first thing that struck us as interesting is its location.

Unlike other hotels nearby, which are located within eye-shot of the bustling Forbes or Fifth Avenue, the Courtyard by Marriott feels a bit removed, even if it is just one block further away from Fifth. So while you can see Soldiers and Sailors within moments of exiting the lobby, this one felt a bit removed from the hustle and bustle of the neighborhood that we appreciated.

During our stay, we were fortunate enough to be able to stay in a suite, which was a much larger version of a conventional room with a comfortable king bed, a living room seating area around the TV, and a dining room table set. Although the amenities were similar to what you would expect from a regular room, the space was massive and allowed for spreading out.

Perhaps our favorite detail within the room goes hand-in-hand with the location- it was quiet. Really quiet. Even though there is a UPMC medical building next door, this one really made us forget that we weren't just feet away from a bright and vibrant neighborhood in all the best ways possible.

Other amenities of the property include a modern gym, a lovely indoor pool (we sadly didn't bring our swimsuits!), and an on-site bar and bistro with a modest menu for those looking for a quick bite. The pool is arguably the most interesting here, as many hotels in Pittsburgh do not have great on-site pool facilities, and the one here was rather nice for what it is.

Going beyond all other details, one of our favorite things about the Courtyard by Marriott Pittsburgh University Center is the price. Not only is it often one of the cheapest hotels in Oakland whenever we look at hotel pricing, it is also among the cheapest hotels in Pittsburgh city limits.

So if you're looking to save a bit of money when visiting the city, this one offers a pretty good value. (Although, we should note, the daily parking fee for the garage is a bit high, so keep that in mind.)

Overall, the Courtyard by Marriott University Center offers a rather relaxing stay and an ambiance that matches what you would expect from Courtyard properties. Throw on quiet rooms, a great location in the heart of Oakland, and nominal extra amenities like a pool, and this one has the makings of a great stay for the price.
