Delicious Portuguese Cuisine in Bloomfield

Bifana Sandwich at Azorean Cafe

We stopped in to Azorean Cafe for a Sunday brunch and the place was buzzing.

We browsed the menu which included lots of traditional Azorean sandwiches, stews, and casseroles. As we were unfamiliar with this cuisine, we asked a few questions about which dishes were the most iconic to the country. The staff were super friendly and helpful in guiding us to our decisions- the bifana sandwich and the bacalhau casserole.

We placed our order at the counter and took a seat, admiring the cute cafe tables, artwork, and plants.

Soon our food came and we were sinking our teeth into the bifana sandwich with pork loin, sauteed onions, lettuce, and a garlic sauce, all served on a traditional Portuguese roll. With the savory pork, crunchy lettuce, and caramelized onions, the flavors were all on point. We would have loved even more garlic sauce to amp up the sauciness.

Bacalhau Casserole at Azoeran Cafe

The bacalhau casserole definitely surpassed our expectations. This casserole was served in an adorable little metal tray and included a mix of flaky, tender cod with potatoes, all bathed in a bechamel-style white sauce.

The most impressive and interesting part? The layer of whipped egg whites on top that was baked to golden perfection.

Don't Miss the Poruguese Egg Tarts at Azorean Cafe

Portuguese Egg Tarts in Pittsburgh

Although we were quite full, we had to try the Portuguese egg tarts from the bakery case. These babies are like little mini custard pies with a sweet, eggy filling and rich, tender pie crust. Yum!

Although we stuck to lunch fare, there are plenty of breakfast options as well including egg/sausage sandwiches and omelettes as well as more American style breakfasts.

We love everything about this spot and truly wish more places like this existed in Pittsburgh: counter-style ordering, a casual vibe, and interesting and unique international food have won us over big time.

Azorean Cafe was located at 4715 Liberty Avenue in Bloomfield and closed in April 2023.
